I think what she meant was that the media coverage of Beattie’s pregnancy did not demonstrate any kind of any commitment to valuing the dignity of all people, regardless of gender identity — instead, Beattie was basically gawked at by millions of people who didn’t take away from his story any kind of greater understanding of transgender issues.  The freak show isn’t Beattie himself — it’s the media circus surrounding him and what it says about the low level of acceptance of transgendered people.
